Today is the last day of the Stache. Despite Skippy’s critique of the Stache (check comments on last posting), I will look back at my 35-day adventure in facial fair. Sure, I didn’t grow a great moustache, but I never expected to. I just hoped to entertain myself and others while raising money for a new home for ImprovBoston. I am happy to say that the theatre met its first benchmark for raising money, and construction is expected to begin soon on the new home in central square. The Stache and your generous support were a major part. This silly little moustache raised around $1,300. That is phenomenal. I hope you all enjoyed the idea of it, this blog, and the execution. Saying goodbye has been tough mostly for my male co-workers. I think deep down every guy wishes moustaches were widely accepted so that men could grow one free of any social stigma. Sadly, these are moustache oppressive times. All week, co-workers have been expressing their regret that the moustache would be leaving the workplace. Last night, someone took a picture with his camera phone. Today, another buddy took a series of pictures with his digital camera. I am glad that it made the workplace a little brighter for a few weeks. So I will shave it tomorrow, take some pictures, and then update this blog for the last time. Day 30: Last day (Not really)

So today is technically the last day of the moustache-athon, but fear not. Since people pre-paid I will continue to grow for teh rest of teh work week

But let’s take stock of teh many wonderful things i have done so far during the past month

Had dinner with one of the big bosses of my firm
Went on a business trip to DC
Talked to pretty girls (they must have been into charity)
Helped close a business deal
Celebrated a birthday

That is just off the top of my head. None of those things were too affected by my nose neighbor. Still, I can’t wait to shave.

Day 25: Spelling

I have been getting a lot of crap about spelling moustache the way i do. Well here is some information via the keeper of the laguage, the Oxford English Dictionary.

In old moustache (see sense 5) after French vieille moustache, lit. ‘old moustache’ (1817 or earlier; cf. moustache soldier (1745)).
With sense 4 and moustache monkey (see sense Compounds), cf. MOUSTAC n., moustached monkey n. at MOUSTACHED adj. Special uses.
In present British use the unaltered French spelling moustache is almost universal, but the earlier British dictionaries (Johnson, Walker, Smart) and most American dictionaries prefer the semi-Anglicized form mustache, which predominates in American usage; exceptionally the third edition of Webster (1961) gives moustache as the principal headword spelling, but later editions of Webster’s New Collegiate Dict. (from the 8th ed., 1973) give mustache. With regard to the pronunciation, N.E.D. (1908) s.v. states that British usage was divided between (u) //; and () //; in the first syllable; and that in the United States () // appeared to be general. In 19th-cent. sources the quantity of the vowel in the second syllable varies, but stress is regularly marked as falling on the second syllable.]

Day 23 Moustache Envy Part 2

Let me introduce you to Camilo. I am not sure if the moustacheathon is his idea, mine, or the idea of Brian Bridges. However, Camilo is the leader of our merry bunch in that he took the lead. He got us organized. Made a pledge sheet for us to use in order to raise the money. He lit a fire under me to get me to agree to do this stupid thing in the first place. He sends out encouraging e-mails to the lot of us to get us through this trying time.

He also leads by example. He has one of the best moustaches of the bunch/ Part Stalin par Borat. I am pretty sure his moustache is planning a very violent takeover of the Cambridge . Look at the pic below of the two of us from a couple days ago to just see the difference. I keep telling myself that Camilo had a head start (which he did), but I don’t think my moustache could ever be as evil as his.

In response to constant criticism on the part of certain co-workers, I finally went down to a pure moustache.

And I pretty much hate it. I realized again why this moustche-athon has raised so much money (almost $900 in donations and pledges). I look terrible with facial hair. Especially attempted moustache-like facial hair.

Here are some brief work interactions to illustrate my point.

At Lunch: A recently hired co-worker asked me why I would want to grow a moustache. I explained to him the concept and that I was raising money for ImprovBoston. And I ended with

“So, I am doing it because it is a funny way to raise money, not because I look great with facial hair.”

“No,” said Female Co-worker who was also at the lunch table, ” It looks gooooood. HAH HAH HAH HAH”

“I liked how you couldn’t even say that with a straight face,” chimed in yet another co-worker.

During a work pow-wow, another co-worker and I were having and in depth discussion about this project we are trying to finish by the morning. We were going over the assignments and the separate issues of law, when, all of a sudden, she started laughing hysterically.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “I just can’t take you seriously with that moustache.”

We had been talking for ten minutes at that point. And she had already seen the moustache earlier that day in another meeting. Apparently, I look that ridiculous.

Day 15: Even lamer

So, i have been accused of cheating, and maybe other people are right. My growing of the full beard made it look like i was just a dude who hadn’t shaved the night before. So now I am rocking just my moustahce and a little chin hair. So now it looks like i am early trying to grow facial hair, but failing miserably.

Day 14: In all it’s glory

So it has been 14 days. People are complaining that i haven’t shaved down to a moustache yet. I will shave down to something this weekend. My plan was to grow it all out and see what my facial hair options were. I have been looking at the traffic, and not a lot of peopel are viewing the pics in their full sized awesomeness. So, just to bring hom how great i look right now. Here is a full pic

There was a link posted in the kickball newslatter, so I thought I would give any new comers a quick orientation. In addition to being an obnoxiously peppy kickball captain and a mediocre karoake singer, I also belong to an amazing non-profit theater called ImprovBoston. IB is in the middle of a big fundraising push, and I am helping out by growing soem facial hair. Right now it is scratchy beard, but it will soon be a glorious (and by glorious I mean inadequate and shameful) moustache.
